The role model for Ai Ogura in racing (and it’s not Valentino Rossi or another big name)

Riders often have idols and role models among their peers from the past, but Ai Ogura’s inspiration might come as a surprise.

The Japanese rider, set to move up to MotoGP in 2025, revealed to MOW Mag that he wasn’t a dedicated follower of racing in his childhood: ‘When I was young, I didn’t watch races on TV very often. I was focused on my weekends because my parents would always take me to small circuits, and I only saw my own little world’.

As for role models, Ogura replied: ‘I know many have idols like Valentino [Rossi], [Jorge] Lorenzo, [Casey] Stoner… I like watching races and really appreciate these riders, but… if I had to say, maybe Daijiro, yes. Daijiro Kato’.

Although Kato doesn’t have the international renown of the legendary idols often cited, he was a very important figure in Japan and also for Ogura, who explained:

– He was… no one in Japan is like him. He is on another level. Harada also won a title, and there are several champions like [Kazuto] Sakata and Haruchika Aoki. Daijiro only won one title in 250cc, but he’s like a god. Speaking of numbers, he raced with #74, which I think is why so many Japanese riders use #7.

Kato competed in the World Championships from 1996 to 2003, starting in the 250cc class, where he won the championship in 2001. He then raced a full season in MotoGP in 2002, finishing seventh with two podiums, but only participated in one GP in 2003.
