Ducati made its debut in the MXGP World Motocross Championship this past weekend. Preparing for a full-time entry in 2025, Tony Cairoli rode the Desmo450 MX in the Netherlands MXGP at Arnhem, marking the manufacturer’s first foray onto the international stage after months of competing in the Italian championship.

The qualifying race showed promise: the nine-time world champion finished seventh, spending much of the race within the top four. These were encouraging signs heading into the main races the following day, and they were indeed realized.

In the first race, Cairoli didn’t have the best start, which set him back significantly. However, he managed to finish in 15th place, earning Ducati its first six points in the MXGP.

But misfortune struck in the second race. As can happen with a project still in development, the bike experienced a technical issue on the sixth lap, forcing Cairoli to retire. At that time, he was in ninth place and had set the sixth-fastest lap time in the race. Overall, the Italian ended up 18th in the final standings of the Netherlands MXGP.

Following this initial MXGP appearance, Ducati will refocus on its development efforts in the Italian championship, with the next races set for August 31 and September 1 in Castiglione del Lago. Alessandro Lupino currently leads the championship with two rounds remaining.
