Exactly one week ago, the MXGP and MX2 had their final round in Castilla la Mancha, where Jorge Prado confirmed the renewal of the world title in the main category, while Kay de Wolf made his debut as a winner in MX2, in a battle that was also extended until the last round.

Cózar received the MXGP elite in both classes and with suspense reigning, since in the MXGP there were still three riders (mathematically speaking) fighting for the title: Prado, Tim Gajser and Jeffrey Herlings, while in the MX2 Lucas Coenen and de Wolf were battling for the final victory.

Indeed, the decisions were made until the very end and there were many intense moments on the track, and, in the end, the celebrations:

Tim Gajser concluded the MXGP World Championship season in second place, a result that, while satisfying, left the Slovenian rider with a mix of emotions. After an intense and competitive season, Gajser expressed his frustration at not being able to clinch the title but also highlighted the positive aspects of his performance.

Obviously to come second in the championship and be so close to winning is difficult, but overall I can’t be too critical of the year we had. There were a lot of positives to take away from this year, and even though it is hard to see those right at this moment, I am still proud of what we achieved and to be the second-best motocross rider in the world is still incredible’, Gajser said in an official release after the final round of the World Championship in Cózar, Spain.

The rider, a multiple world champion, made a point of acknowledging the work of his team: ‘The team and I did everything we could to make it happen and a big shoutout to all of them for their work in what has been a long and intense year. I couldn’t do it without their support and wish I could have made it happen for them’.

Now, Gajser is gearing up for the next challenge, the Motocross of Nations, which takes place this coming weekend: ‘Now, I have the Motocross of Nations next weekend and then it’s a bit of a break before trying to do it all over again next year.

Jorge Prado confirmed last Sunday at the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha the renewal of the category’s world title, and admitted that he didn’t think so little, at the beginning of the year, that he might be able to achieve it.

At the end of the stage in Spain, the GASGAS rider did not hide his happiness for the achievement, and admitted that it was not in his plans, at the beginning of the season, to achieve such a feat:

I almost don’t know what to say – I’ve got the title here in Spain, and it’s just incredible! It’s been a great year, and I think the team and I truly deserve this title after all the work we’ve put in. At the start of the season, I never imagined being in this position, but everything just clicked. That second moto felt super long, but crossing the finish line was the best feeling.

The path to the title was not easy, with Prado remaining in the hunt for a long time, and «only» in the round in Shanghai, the penultimate in the championship, did he regain the lead: ‘So much goes on behind the scenes with the team to get results like this, and I’m so grateful to take home my fourth world title here in front of family, friends, and fans. Thank you to everyone for the amazing support – it’s been an awesome year, and I’m proud we did it together!’

Spain’s Jorge Prado became the 2024 MXGP world champion after an intense final battle with Tim Gajser. With a win in the first race and a strategic fourth place in the second, Prado secured the points needed to secure the title, beating Gajser by a dozen points in the final standings.

The first race saw Prado (GASGAS) take the win, with the Spaniard thus putting one and a half hands on the title after beating his most direct opponent in the title fight, Gajser (Honda), by 2.766s. Jeremy Seewer (Kawasaki) was third, ahead of his teammate Romain Febvre.

Jeffrey Herlings (KTM), who mathematically still had a chance of the title – before this round – subject to a few conditions, was sixth, behind Alberto Forato (Honda).

With the final race, Gajser could still dream of the title in the category, but he was starting out with an almost impossible mission.

Herlings ended up winning and thus closing the year on a high note, beating Febvre by 5.501s, and Gajser was on the podium, probably having one of the least happy podiums, as he saw Prado, in fourth, managing the race and “simply” riding away to take another title, renewing a world championship that he defended, with a few pitfalls and less positive rounds this year. Seewer rounded off the podium.

In the end, with 43 points, Prado won the GP and finished the year with 996 points, 10 more than Gajser who, with 42 points, was unable to “steal” the title from his opponent, who had been leading the year until very recently, but the round in Shanghai, China, before this one, turned out to be decisive.

The MXGP World Motocross Championship concludes this weekend, and for the second time, a Ducati Desmo450 MX will be competing – now with Alessandro Lupino participating in the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha.

Last August, the Borgo Panigale manufacturer made its debut in the championship, with Tony Cairoli racing in the Dutch MXGP. On the sand track of Arnhem, the veteran Italian rider left a strong impression.

Now, it’s Lupino’s turn to race in MXGP, preparing for Ducati’s full-time debut next year. The rider has also been competing in the Italian championship, where he currently leads with a 338-point advantage.

After many successes on speed tracks, Ducati is now venturing into motocross, aiming to achieve similar victories with this new project. Recently, Ducati announced Jeremy Seewer as one of their riders for next year.

Tim Gajser had a very complicated round at the MXGP of China, with the rider from Team HRC to lose the championship leadership that he owned for such a long time.

The slovenian had a terrible start and crash, only to crash afterwards once again in Shangai. He ended up getting to recover some ground but given his main opponent actually got to have a 2-1, he lost the lead in the world championship, which is a hard blow, as he considered:

After having such a consistent season, to have a day like at such a crucial time is hard to take. To lose the championship red-plate with one round left is definitely not what I wanted to happen and now I know that with three races to go, I have to win them all.

However, Gajser promised to give his all until the very end of the last moments: ‘It isn’t an ideal situation but I will keep fighting and give my all until the very end’.

Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing rider Orge Prado returned to the top of the MXGP World Championship after a convincing victory in China. With just one round to play, the Spaniard regained the red plate as championship leader, distancing himself 7 points from his closest rival, Tim Gajser.

In a race marked by intense heat and high humidity, Prado demonstrated his superiority by taking second place in the first heat and victory in the second, thus guaranteeing the overall Grand Prix triumph.

After his remarkable performance, Prado shared his impressions of the weekend: ‘The MXGP of China is done, and it was a great weekend for me. I went P1 in practice, then finished second in Moto 1 and first in Moto 2. It was very tough physically – very humid, with high temperatures’.

The Spanish rider highlighted his commitment in the second race: ‘After the first moto, I gave it my all and focused on finishing the weekend as strong as possible. We did that, and now we have the red plate and a seven-point lead with one round left. This gives us a dream opportunity at the end of the season, and I’m so excited for the final round in Spain. I don’t think anyone expected us to come out of this GP with the red plate. We worked really hard on the bike this weekend, and I think my riding was great’.

Looking ahead to the final race of the championship, which will be held in Spain, Prado did not hide his enthusiasm: ‘We got the points we were aiming for, and I’m super, super happy – I still can’t believe it! Let’s get the title in Spain!’

With the victory, Jorge Prado puts himself in a privileged position to renew his title in the main category of world motocross, in a final that promises to be exciting on Spanish soil.

The MXGP of China had a last-minute change, given that a typhoon was forecast to hit the region tomorrow – race day – and the action had to be brought forward by a day, with Sunday being chaotic and all the action taking place in one go and almost non-stop. Who wasn’t affected by this was Jorge Prado, who shone with a 2-1 win to move into the lead of the World Championship over Tim Gajser, on a day when Romain Febvre returned to winning ways.

The first heat was marked by two crashes involving Gajser, one at the start and the other later on, which slowed the Team HRC rider down significantly and especially at a truly decisive time in the championship.

Febvre (Kawasaki) was the one who didn’t give in, winning the first race, something that hadn’t happened since this year’s MXGP of Trentino, with Prado (GASGAS) second and Herlings (KTM) third. Rúben Fernández (Honda) was fourth and Glenn Coldenhoff (Fantic) rounded out the top five. Gajser was 17th, scoring just 4 points.

In the second heat, “normality” returned and there were no major incidents as far as the title contenders were concerned, with Prado taking the win and cementing his lead in the championship, and Gajser coming in second ahead of Febvre. The top five was completed by Herlings and Jan Pancar (KTM).

Looking at the accounts for the MXGP of China, overall victory went to Prado with 47 points, two more than Febvre and nine more than Herlings, while Gajser was seventh with 26.

In terms of the championship, the new leader is Prado, who is in the best position to renew the title he won in 2023, with 943 points, seven more than Gajser. Mathematically, Herlings could still win the title if he wins both races and scores 50 points, and if Prado scores a maximum of 1 point and Gajser 8.

The 19th round of the MXGP World Championship takes Tim Gajser and Team HRC to Shanghai, China, as the series approaches its thrilling climax. With Gajser currently 14 points ahead in the standings, six strong races here and in Spain in the final round could secure him his sixth world title, however, as always, the Slovenian will be looking for victory to finish the season in style.

This time, the action will take place on Sunday and Monday, giving the riders and all team members an extra day to prepare and adjust their machines for the challenges of what is expected to be a hot weekend in the Chinese region.

The races are also scheduled for an hour earlier (local time) than usual, as is typical for events outside of Europe. However, none of these schedule changes should affect the riders who will certainly give their best.

Tim Gajser, the current championship leader, thus previewed the next round of the world championship in the following category:

– I have good memories from China in 2019, as this is where I received the trophy after winning the MXGP Championship that year. I guess the track will be different this time around, but they did a good job with everything last time so I’m interested to see what they come up with for the weekend. Well actually, it is Sunday-Monday racing, which is a little different but won’t make any difference once we are there at the track, so I’m excited to get there and get going!

Often overlooked or with less antenna time than other motorcycling modalities, the MXGP World Championship is in final stages and only two rounds for late season is missing and even if mathematically three drivers are still in the title fight, only only two seem to really dream of the final triumph: Tim Gajser and Jorge Prado, while Jeffrey Herlings is in the race but it depends (and much) what the competition can do.

Currently the leader is Gajser (Honda), with 910 points summed so far, while the most direct pursuer is the current champion in title, Prado (GASGAS), with 14-point minus (896 in total), and further distant but still with possibilities – mathematically – to get the title, is Herlings (KTM) with 857 points, when they are in dispute still 100 total, 50 per round.

And this weekend the scenario in what to the champion concerns may begin to have one more important chapter: if Gajser and Prado will take, within normality, the fight to the final round, China’s MXGP could definitively draft Herlings from the title fight , just for what Gajser is 44 points.

So it seems then more likely that we focus on who is closest and effectively in the fight: Gajser leads and has so far six wins this year (in racing), while Prado has more than double (!), 15 – and ten of them in great style, with doublets – but it is proof that regularity is the ‘key’ of success.

By way of curiosity note that Herlings has 12 wins on race and is the ones «most away from the title, among the top contenders.

And you, what would you bet to beat the world of MXGP?
